What Materials Does Jenny Be Free Use?

Hello, hello! Welcome back to the blog.

Last week, we shared a little about the story behind Jenny Be Free and how it all began. If you haven’t read that one yet, definitely check it out—it gives you the heart and soul of why JBF exists.

This week, we’re diving into something just as important: materials. Jewelry lingo can feel confusing—plated, filled, coated, solid—what does it all even mean?! Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

At Jenny Be Free, we’re all about creating pieces that not only look stunning but also feel good to wear. That’s why we carefully source materials that are hypoallergenic, tarnish-resistant, and waterproof. Let’s break it down:

🌟 18k Gold Plated Stainless Steel with PVD Coating

A large part of our collection is made from 18k gold plated stainless steel with an extra layer of protection called PVD coating.

  • Gold Plated: A thin layer of real gold applied over a base metal. Many brands use brass or copper, but we choose stainless steel because it’s hypoallergenic, durable, and water-resistant.
  • PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition): This is a fancy science process where vaporized gold bonds at a molecular level to the base metal, making your jewelry extra resistant to tarnishing and everyday wear.
  • Durability: It’s strong, scratch-resistant, and can handle daily wear without losing its shine or shape.
  • Affordable Luxury: Stainless steel offers the look and feel of higher-end metals at a much more accessible price point. It allows us to create on-trend, timeless, and chic designs that you can wear every day without the luxury price tag.
  • Eco-Friendly: Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, which makes it a more sustainable choice compared to many other base metals.

💛 Gold Filled Jewelry

Beyond our stainless-steel pieces, we also offer jewelry made with gold-filled materials, especially with our dainty rings, hoops and permanent jewelry collection. Gold-filled is often seen as the “sweet spot” between gold-plated and solid gold.

  • Gold Filled: A thick layer of real gold is pressure-bonded to a base metal (usually brass). Unlike gold plating, which is a thin coating, the gold in gold-filled pieces makes up at least 5% of the item’s total weight.
  • Durability: Because of the thicker layer of gold, gold-filled jewelry is more resistant to tarnish, chipping, and fading, and with proper care, it can last for decades.
  • Hypoallergenic: Gold-filled jewelry is generally safe for sensitive skin, especially when compared to lower-quality plated options.
  • Value: It offers the beauty and longevity of gold without the full price tag of solid gold.

💎 Sterling Silver Jewelry

  • Durable & Strong: Made with 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (often copper) to give it strength while keeping its elegance.
  • Hypoallergenic: Generally safe for sensitive skin thanks to its high silver content.
  •  Affordable Luxury: Offers the beauty of a precious metal at a more accessible price point compared to solid gold or platinum.
  •  Versatile: Its neutral tone pairs effortlessly with gold pieces and works for both casual and formal wear.
  • Long-Lasting: With proper care (like polishing and safe storage), sterling silver can last for decades and even become heirloom-worthy.

At the end of the day, we want you to feel confident in what you’re wearing—knowing your jewelry is made with quality materials that let you shine freely.

So tell us… what kind of material girl (or guy 😉) are you?

XO,

JBF TEAM
